What I Look For in a CCW Holster For Glock 19

How comfortable is the holster

When it comes to CCW holsters, the main objective is of course concealability. But on top of that, comfort is a big factor for me.

As the G19 is a great everyday carry weapon, I will carry my G19 regularly and possibly for long periods of time. For that reason, any CCW holster I pick must be comfortable enough to enable long periods of comfortable carry.

How practical is the holster

Another important aspect I consider is how practical the holster is to carry.

Should holsters is a option for the G19, but as a civilian I am unlikely to carry a should holsters. You would typically need to wear a jacket to conceal the weapon when wearing a shoulder holster.

Belly band holsters might be comfortable, but accessibility might be an issue if you need to be able to access your weapon quickly.

Ankle holsters is likely to be the most popular CCW option for the G19, however I personally would be concerned that the size of the G19 would make it less concealable and comfortable.

Shoulder Holsters

The Galco Shoulder Holster, also known as the Galco Miami Classic or the Galco Classic Lite, is a high-quality and comfortable horizontal shoulder holster system designed for concealed carry. Made from premium saddle leather or center-cut steerhide (depending on the model), the Galco Shoulder Holster offers a durable and stylish option for carrying your firearm.

This shoulder holster system consists of a horizontal gun holster, a double magazine carrier, and a set of adjustable harness straps that distribute the weight of the firearm and magazines evenly across your shoulders. This design provides comfort and reduces fatigue during extended periods of wear.

The snap thumb break retention strap ensures that your firearm remains secure while still allowing quick and easy access when needed.

Ideal for those who prefer an alternative to traditional inside-the-waistband or outside-the-waistband carry methods, the Galco Shoulder Holster provides a comfortable, discreet, and reliable concealed carry solution.

What I like about the holster:

  1. Comfort: The adjustable harness straps distribute the weight of the firearm and magazines evenly across your shoulders, providing comfort during extended periods of wear.
  2. Discreet carry: The horizontal orientation of the gun holster allows for a more discreet carry option, as it is concealed under a jacket or other outerwear.

  5. Quality materials: Made from premium saddle leather or center-cut steerhide, the holster is both durable and stylish.

What I do not like about the holster:

  1. Limited concealment options: The shoulder holster requires wearing a jacket or other outerwear for proper concealment, which may not be suitable for all situations or climates.
  2. Slower draw time: Drawing from a shoulder holster can be slower than drawing from a waistband holster due to the need to reach across the body.
  3. Potential for printing: Depending on the clothing and body type, the firearm may print through the cover garment, making it noticeable to others.
  4. Initial setup and adjustment: Adjusting the harness straps to achieve a comfortable and secure fit may require some time and patience.
  5. Price: The Galco Shoulder Holster can be more expensive than other holster options, but the quality materials and construction may justify the higher cost for some users.

Wrapping Up

In this article I focussed on the truly concealed carry options of shoulder holsters, ankle holsters and belly band holsters. From a practical point of view, I would consider one of the ankle holsters for my concealed carry needs.

There is not a lot of difference between the ankle holsters listed, but personally I would opt for the ComforTac holster.

Have you tried out any of the holsters I listed? If so, what did you think of them?
